Found this “rat rod” monstrosity on craigslist, and the suspension design is, even to an amateur like me, absolutely terrifying.
The rear suspension
is a crude mess, but the icing on the cake is the front pivots appear to be TIE RODS. Because that is the best choice for handling the torque this will encounter. But that is nothing
compared to the front..
The front of he frame is an upside-down trailer hitch, and the transverse leaf spring is bolted it a ball mount that is kept in place via a standard hitch pin. Meaning the only thing keepi ng the front suspension from falling off the car is a FUCKING COTTER PIN!
I guess the only bright spot here is this guy decided to sell this heap as a project instead of actually trying to drive it on the roads.

No thank you

Materials science? What’s that? I see a lot of 10 0-lb parts doing 10 00- lb jobs.

Science? Sounds like some commie conspiracy to me

the rear suspension doesn’t look that insane, at least in concept. the implementation is incomplete. For a coil/airbag sprung live axle, you typically have the lower control arms, coils/bags, upper control arms, and a Panhard rod or Watts link. he’s got the LCAs and Panhard rod there, but I don’t see any UCAs.

Yeah but safety factor so it’s all fine

Why? Because New Hampshire.

That quadruplicating your cheap clips makes it safer? Sure.
Then again, I see this is a NH posting. NH doesn’t believe in safety because Fuck You, that’s why.

If you don’t have high horsepower and are not worried about axle wrap, just having the lower bars is fine.

To be fair, that’s also the only thing keeping millions of 6,000+ lb
trailers from falling off the receivers of trucks. They don’t fail that often because they’re not a stressed component.

My jaw legit dropped at the front suspension.

Just goes to show that this”engineering” stuff is easy. Any fool can do it.

but did you see what they used for the frame?.......... HEH, the guy used an old engine hoist frame........

probably has been driven on road and he’s selling it as he thinks it’s sketchy as hell, and trying to recover some money selling it to some other sucker

Holey shit! You're right. I completely missed that.

As much as I admire Colin Chapman, I still think you can take this “
simplify and add lightness”
business too far.
